Why I Commute 800 Miles To Work

By Phil / March 12th, 2012

I’m a cosmetic dentist at Cherrybank Dental Spa in Edinburgh and I commute to work every week by flying on Wednesday from Exeter to Edinburgh, and flying back on Friday.

When people hear that I’m travelling 800 miles to work every week I always get the same reaction of surprise “really?!” followed by disbelief “no way!”, followed by bewilderment (why?!). And I always tell people he same thing…. Why would I not to work in one of the best jobs I’ve ever had, with great job satisfaction?

When you break it down, my flight actually takes me 3 hours door to door. The average commute is 1hr a day I’m told. I just prefer to get all the hours done in one go!

I like flying, and it has enabled the world to get so much smaller. And yes it is tiring, and at times lonely and some days you can’t be bothered, but how has anything worthwhile ever come easy?

I’m lucky in that I have a wonderful supportive husband waiting for me when I get back, and it’s true absence does make the heart grow finder. It’s only 2 nights out of the week so it’s perfectly manageable. Plus I get to live and work in two wonderful cities!
