Test Drive Your Smile with DSD

By Phil / March 18th, 2013

When considering porcelain veneers, or even tooth whitening, it is natural to feel a certain amount of anxiety about how the end result will look. Will I still look like me? Will my new veneers look natural? I don’t want to look like a different person…

We hear these fears and anxieties all the time and at Cherrybank Dental Spa in Perth and Edinburgh and we make sure that we utilise the latest techniques, not only to analyse your smile, and to involve you in the decisions about the end result, but we also utilise a Test Drive approach.

Whatever the solutions may be for improving the appearance of your smile, the most important part is a smile design template.

The first step is usually a clinical analysis where we detect the health or disease levels in your mouth. Then we have a photographic analysis to look at your face and how your smile fits in. We also use video analysis as the lip moves very differently in speech and real smiles compared to a posed smile for a photograph. It is important to know how much gum display there is during speech and full movement of the lip. This varies a lot from person to person. Someone with a low smile line shows no gum at all. They may also not have much tooth display which can be an aging appearance. Some people have what is called a hypermobile lip where lots of gum is displayed above the upper teeth. Most people are somewhere in between. But it is important to know what kind of smile you have so that the solution for your smile can look as natural as possible.

So we have clinical, photographic and video analysis. The last step is the digital analysis where the possibilities are designed using computer aided design. This is then carefully calibrated and in many cases a digital smile is formulated. Whether the solution is to involve moving teeth (orthodontics including invisible tooth straightening like Invisalign, or short term fixed braces), bonding or porcelain veneers, it is possible to calibrate to a template of the new smile.

In many cases, particularly if you have spaces or a gappy smile, we can do a test drive without any preparation to your teeth. This lets you preview the end result and lets us check with photographs and video whether your new smile is right for you. This is also achieved for fixed teeth in a day (all on four/same day teeth) or if you need more extensive treatment. The aim is to let you see the end results and make changes before the final smile is created.
