Point of View of a Treatment Coordinator

By Phil / April 22nd, 2013

My job as a treatment coordinator is to meet new patients, get to know them and to find out their wants and desires for their mouth, and today we had a huge variety of new patients (all with different situations) and I also saw a few of our existing patients enquiring about more treatment that may be available to them.

Some of the treatment I discussed with patients (old and new) today was dental implants, and porcelain veneer work.

Dental implants:

I have to be honest and say that this is my favourite treatment that we do here at cherrybank, mainly because I see firsthand how it changes people’s lives.  Some people come to us with no knowledge of what dental implants are and then some people come to us with a wealth of knowledge.

A dental implant is a titanium fixture that is screwed in to the bone and is the best solution to replace a missing tooth, or a tooth that may have to be extracted (for whatever reason). Once that fixture is in the bone and has healed (ossiointegrated) then we can decide what we do top of that. So what I mean by that is sometimes we are replacing a patient’s full mouth with an implant solution, we call this fixed teeth in a day, or sometimes we are only replacing a single tooth.  There are many different ways dental implants can be used, and it takes a lot of preparation to determine what is best for our patients but it’s that preparation and discussion with the patient that I love!!

So we had a patient today that was interested in Dental implants, this patient didn’t have much knowledge of what they were or what they could do, so we spent a lot of time discussing this, the pros, cons, benefits, procedure, post operative issues, costs and the possible outcome for the patient.  The patient is going ahead with implant treatment and we are both very excited at this.

Porcelain veneer:

porcelain Veneers can transforms smiles and lives.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic, bonded to the front of your teeth. They can improve the appearance of gaps, chips, cracks, discolouration, and misalignment in teeth. The layers of translucent, all-ceramic porcelain allow light to shine through, reflecting off the opaque tooth dentin below the surface and giving the appearance of brighter, natural-looking teeth. The tooth needs to be reduced to the right shape so that the veneer will make everything line up correctly once it is fitted. There are different types of porcelain veneers that can be placed and depending on the type and number of veneers needed.

We had a patient in today who has a wedding in 3 weeks time, and wants her smile more even and harmonious so the wedding, so we are using all our favours and making this happen for this lovely lady. We also had a bond over a certain Smartphone app that we both find frustrating!

The point of this little blog is that we have different people coming through our doors, all for different things and I can’t wait until tomorrow to see what it brings!
