Harley Street Comes to Cherrybank

By Phil / September 6th, 2013

I travelled to London on Monday to work with my colleagues on Harley Street in London. It has been a little while since I travelled to London and I had forgotten what a lovely area it is. The buildings, the cafe culture and the people watching!

I was there on business though to visit the practice of Michael Zybutz and his brother Anthony. I have know Michael for many years and he was one of the key inspirations towards myself, David Bloom and Chris Orr founding the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Michael is a periodontist and was the first UK dentist to be accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

My reason for visiting was connected to fixed teeth in a day or same day smiles. Michael and his team had recently visited our Edinburgh practice to place dental implants for three fixed teeth in a day patients. He is one of the most methodical and skilled surgeons that I know. At Cherrybank Dental Spas in Perth and Edinburgh – we believe in a team approach, and in cherry-picking (forgive the pun!) the best team to care for our individual patients.

I brought several scans and xrays with me so that I could sit down with Michael and discuss the best treatment options – I am a firm believer that there is always more than one way to solve a problem, and so more eyes and opinions will help us to get closer to the ideal outcome. I also met with the owner of a CT Scan Company as we plan to invest in our own scanner – our Perth teams and Edinburgh teams are fighting over where it should go!!

While I was there, I observed Michael placing zygomatic implants. These are very long implants that can be placed high up into the cheek bone where the only alternative would be a block graft of bone to replace what was missing. This lady had had four mini-implants placed to stabilise her upper denture. The mini-implants were failing and coming loose. She had been told she didn’t have enough bone but Michael and Anthony were able to remove the failing implants, place five more, and she left with a fixed bridge. The surgical procedure was carried out under sedation provided by the brilliant Nico from Sedation Solutions – a regular visitor to our practices also.

I will never forget how the lady ran her tongue across her palate when she sat up – and the look of absolute wonder on her face ‘I have my teeth, but I can feel my palate!!” Denture wearers will understand her reaction.

Thank you to the Zybutz team for making me so welcome in your practice, for sharing your experiences and expertise with dental implants, and I look forward to working with you again in the near future.
