FAQ – What is a dental Spa?
“What is a dental spa?” – this is a question I have been asked many times, and I can tell you, there have been a few funny conversations with people trying to guess what happens at a dental spa – not to mention the suggestions we get!
Some of the comments and questions I have been asked are:
“Do you have a jacuzzi?”
“Can I bring my swimsuit?”
“How much extra does the spa cost?”
“Is that just a gimmick?”
Unfortunately, we do not have a jacuzzi and thankfully nobody has turned up in a swimsuit … yet!!
But seriously what does a dental spa mean? It is a proven concept that using relaxing treatments and creating a calm ambience usually associated with day spas can eliminate the stress and anxiety that is so often linked to dental treatment.
It can be as simple as acting as a distraction but there is science behind it too. For example, we all know (and dislike) the “dental smell”. Smell is closely linked to memory and emotion, so to combat that, we bake bread twice daily so that when you walk in, the smell is one of bread and coffee.
We also avoid the dental products that have that “cloves” scent. In the treatment rooms, we use scented candles and lavender wraps. While great for those who are more nervous of the dentist, it also enhances the experience for everyone.
At Cherrybank Dental Spa in Perth, it has become a great excuse for many to come in early and enjoy being pampered for a little part of their day. It’s amazing the conversations that crop up outside of work. I was at the hairdressers recently and I bumped into a friend that I haven’t seen in a long time and after a while, she asked me if I still worked in Perth for “a dental surgery”. I told her that I am very lucky to work in a team of highly talented people who have a real passion for excellent customer service and improving peoples lives – she was amazed because she didn’t think I’d ever move out of dentistry, and she was even more surprised when I told her I hadn’t!! She asked me how I can be so excited about working in a dentist – “I mean, who wants to look inside mouths all day?” I think she might wish she never asked …… 30 minutes later, and 2 more ladies joining in we had a great discussion about all things dentistry …from sterilisation procedures, veneers, implants, Invisalign and teeth whitening, to the usual childhood dentist horror stories!!
Most of them seemed oblivious to how dentistry could and should be. When I explained that we would ask what your goals are for your mouth, teeth and smile, I think they thought I was kidding – so delving a bit further it turns out she is very conscious of her smile and one tooth in particular. She was amazed because she had always been but had never thought about doing anything, mainly because nobody had ever asked her about it. I told her about the photos we would take of her mouth, and how we would sit together and educate her as to the current situation and what the possibilities for her mouth there could be. She was fascinated as this is not something she had ever experienced before…. To be involved and not just given a list of what’s needed – to actually have choices?! The conversation went on to different subjects but it just struck me that what we do every day is so foreign to a lot of people – everyone needs to experience Cherrybank!
