Cherrybank Introduces Digital Scanning for Invisalign

We are very pleased to be working with Invisalign to bring the latest ‘Science in Every Smile’ to our patients in Edinburgh. Traditionally, anyone needing braces needs to have impressions of their teeth. This means that a tray is filled with a runny putty which is inserted over your teeth until it sets. This then gives us a mould of your teeth so that we can do the necessary measurements and make the braces.

Now – we have the Itero Scanner which is a very sophisticated computer. The scanner takes a series of digital photographs which the computer can piece together to form a VIRTUAL model of your teeth. In the case of Invisalign – this can then be emailed to the US for the Invisalign Invisible braces to be made.

There are other advantages too – the computer scan is much more accurate than an impression. All materials have a tendency to absorb water and expand or lose water and contract. They also have to be flexible so that they can be removed from your mouth without getting stuck. All this means that there may be some inaccuracies and the impression doesn’t really represent your mouth. This is not the case with the digital impression.

There are many other uses for digital impressions such as making crowns . This is truly the future of dentistry. We are trialling the Invisalign Itero Scanner for the month of March to see how we and our patients like it compared to the messy impressions. To make the most of this we also have an Invisalign promotion – so far the feedback has been excellent!
