Cherrybank at the Forefront of Oral Cancer Screening

Some of you may have read Michael Douglas’s story of how his throat cancer went undetected for nine months!

In his interview, he said:

I knew something was wrong…my tooth was really sore, and I thought I had an infection.

I had two rounds of appointments with ear-nose-and-throat doctors and periodontists. They each gave me antibiotics, and then more antibiotics, but I still had pain.

After having more checks, the tumor was finally found on his tongue in 2010. It was then he was advised that he had stage 4 cancer.

At Cherrybank Dental Spa, we take oral cancer very seriously – unfortunately current indications show that it is one of the cancers that is becoming more prevalent. The American Dental Association established that 25% of new cases alarmingly do not occur in those who would normally be classed as high risk. We do our utmost to stay at the forefront of new technology so that we may benefit our patients. This is why we provide the additional service of an advanced oral cancer screening – using the VELscope® machine.

The VELscope® is a revolutionary device that provides dentists and hygienists with an aid to oral examination for the early detection of abnormal tissue. It is a safe blue light that is shone into the mouth to let the clinician view underlying tissues that cannot be seen by the naked eye.

We would recommend our patients have this procedure carried out annually, the opportunity to be screened will be given to you at your Dental Health Review.
