A brand new bio-technology is being introduced at Cherrybank Dental Spa
A brand new bio-technology is being introduced from Spain into a dental practice in Perth and Edinburgh.
This technology is developed by a Spanish company based in Bilbao known as the Biotechnology Institute. This Institute has developed the use of Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) for use in dentistry, sports medicine, ophthalmology and facial aesthetics and other medical applications.
Plasma is our blood minus the red blood cells. In this technique, a small amount of blood is taken and placed in a special centrifuge to spin off the red blood cells and then the white blood cells. This leaves a concentrated plasma which contains all the body’s chemicals for healing. When this is activated with calcium, it produces a jelly-like substance or a membrane which is completely natural and can be used in a variety of ways to promote healing.
Dr Elaine Halley from Cherrybank Dental Spa first learned of this technique when studying for an MSc in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry at the University of Manchester. ‘One of the lecturers there was a surgeon from Harley Street who was talking about the results he had obtained using this technique when replacing missing teeth with implants. I then came across it again at a conference on facial aesthetics where Professor Bob Khanna was talking about the research he was doing on its effect in facial aesthetics with dermal fillers’
Dr Halley researched the subject further and found that not all the techniques are the same. Some companies leave the white blood cells in the plasma which does not produce such good results. This is commonly referred to as Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP. She travelled to Spain to visit the research institute and met with dentists and doctors from around Europe who were integrating this treatment into their practices. ‘The evidence and results of the research I saw in Spain by Dr Eduardo Anitua convinced me that this was the gold standard.’
Cherrybank Dental Spa has been offering the treatment as an adjunct to implants for just over a month and already our patients have been very impressed with the results. Dr Halley says ‘ I have also had the plasma injected into my own face – the so-called Vampire Facelift as I felt it was important for me to experience it first hand – I was very impressed. The technique we use with the facial applicator is completely painless. What I like the most is that unlike botox or even facial fillers – it is encouraging your own body with a concentrate of your own growth factors – the results – a glowing more youthful complexion. And the results around dental implants or after a tooth extraction are even more significant : faster healing, less pain, and less inflammation. Our patient last week who had multiple teeth taken out and five implants placed together with the PRGF reported only needing to take a paracetamol afterwards which is incredible.’
In sports medicine, tennis player Rafa Nadal has been a recipient for the treatment in Spain. In addition, there are other applications such as to aid healing in burns victims and for diabetic ulcers.
