Dental Implants in Perth and Edinburgh

One of the most popular and often the gold standard in replacing missing teeth is the provision of dental implants. We work (and have done so for 15 years) with one of Europe’s top surgeons in this field, Paul Stone, who works from his specialist centre at Blackhills by Auchterarder, and with the Edinburgh Dental Specialists in Edinburgh.

They both have state-of-the art imaging equipment which the surgeons can use to assess your bone levels to see if you are a suitable candidate for implant placement. Implants have a very high success rate over the long term – in fact, over 15 years in Perth we have never lost an implant that has been placed by Paul, and we place many implants every year. That speaks volumes.

As implants become more popular and as patients move around, we have found that patients can come to see us with implants with no information. They do not know what type of implants they have and if we need to make any alterations to the teeth over the implants, this can prove to be very complex as each system has its own ‘tool kit’. As with anything, there are cheaper implants and different levels of care. Whilst we can generally source the parts required, occasionally a smaller company will cease production which can be very difficult! We would hate this to happen to any of our patients and so we only work with reputable surgeons and scientifically proven and successful implant systems.

After care of an implant is extremely important and Cherrybank Implant Care provides you with support to maintain your implants and screen for health or pick up any concerns at an early stage. In addition, we go the extra mile and provide you with a certificate detailing the codes of your implants and a ‘tool kit’ so that no matter where you are in the world, you have the information to allow another dentist to assist you with your care.

Your Comfort, Your Health, Your Smile...

How Dental Implants Work

Dental implants consist of two parts – a titanium post implanted into the jawbone below the gum line and a tooth replacement attached to the top of the post. There are several options to consider for the tooth replacement portion, including porcelain crowns, bridges, or dentures. Our cosmetic dentist, Dr. Elaine Halley, will design your teeth replacements to fit your dental implants during your appointment at our practice located in both Edinburgh and Perth, Scotland. Because the post is rooted in the bone cells of your jaw, it has the strength of a real tooth and is virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Placing Your Dental Implants

Although we do not place dental implants at our Perth and Edinburgh practices we can refer you to a qualified oral surgeon who will.

During the dental implant procedure, your surgeon will open a flap in the gums above the jawbone where the implant is to be placed. The titanium post will then be inserted into the bone, which should heal around it for the next three to six months. As this process occurs, the titanium and the bone cells fuse together, creating an anchor for your tooth replacement. The patient often wears a temporary tooth replacement over the implant during this healing period.

When the bone around your dental implants has sufficiently healed, you will return to our practice in Perth or Edinburgh. We will then create your new crown or denture and fit it onto the top of the implant anchor. Once this step is complete, your new dental implant will look and function just like your original tooth.
